Thomas Middlecott Academy take home Sporting Progress Shield

480 secondary school students from across the David Ross Education Trust showcased their incredible sporting talents as they competed for this year’s Spring Cup.

The prestigious sporting event, held on 5 March at the University of Nottingham, saw students from the Trust’s secondary academies compete in hockey and rugby tournaments in a bid to secure the prestigious title.

Students from across the East Midlands, Yorkshire and East of England travelled to the David Ross Sports Village based on the University campus for the annual event.

A number of sports stars were in attendance at the Spring Cup to cheer on the students and provide them with valuable advice, including Jon Clarke from Northampton Saints and England Hockey players from the University of Nottingham Robyn Bentley, Jonny Lankfer and Michael Moran.

Following tense competition, Barnes Wallis Academy from Tattershall in Lincolnshire were crowned the overall Spring Cup champions, whilst Skegness Grammar School gained an impressive second place and Humberston Academy in Grimsby came in at third place. Thomas Middlecott Academy took home the sporting progress Shield with the biggest improvement in results compared to 2018.

OUTSTANDING OPPORTUNITIES

The Spring Cup is just one of the annual highlights within the Trust’s exclusive sports and enrichment programme that aims to inspire and encourage young people to lead active lifestyles and to develop their talents.

By providing an array of outstanding experiences, the Trust supports talented athletes, encouraging them to excel to the highest of standards.

Shane Ward, Head of Sports Enrichment at the David Ross Education Trust, said: “Events such as the Spring Cup not only provide an incredible sporting platform for our students to shine, but they also encourage them to interact with each other and learn about the importance of teamwork and determination, along with having pride in representing their academy.

“Many congratulations to all of the students who took part. We have a huge pool of sporting talent across the Trust’s schools and today was a great showcase for our rugby and hockey stars.”
